O události
Dear readers,
We would like to invite you to the second course of lectures organized by the Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights at the Department of Constitutional Law of the Charles University. This time we will focus on current issues related to the protection of human rights and the rule of law at the level of the European Union.
The third lecture in this series 'Human Rights and the Rule of Law as Pillars of the EU' will be delivered by Maciej Ferek, Paulina Kieszkowska-Knapik, Maria Ejchart-Dubois and Katarzyna Wisniewska, on the topic 'Justice under Attack - Lessons from Poland'. The lecture will take place on 28 November at 18:00 in room 220 at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. The speakers are known to the Czech audience as expelled judges of the Polish judiciary, as well as their lawyers who represented them in groundbreaking cases before the ECtHR. This is therefore a unique opportunity to hear live their experiences of the attack on the independence of the judiciary in Poland.
In his presentation, the speaker will focus primarily on the situation in which the Polish judiciary is currently finding itself. They will discuss how independent judges and prosecutors in Poland are being replaced by judges and prosecutors who suit the current government, how the Polish judiciary is resisting this and what the practical consequences are, specifically the impact on the defence of certain rights - environmental rights, the rights of sexual minorities - and the functioning of the European judicial area. It will also focus on the broader context of the situation, such as how fundamentally the advocates of independent justice have had to change the way they communicate with the Polish and European public.
We hope you will not miss their presentation and we look forward to seeing you there.
