Faculty Night and Screening of “The Hong Konger“ Film

We invite you to the screening of the film “The Hong Konger,“ which will take place at the Faculty of Law, Charles University, as part of the academic festival “Faculty Night.“

“The Hong Konger“ tells the story of political activist Jimmy Lai, who fled mainland China during the Maoist revolution and sought refuge in Hong Kong. However, the aggressive policies of the Chinese government compelled him to engage in politics on behalf of all Hong Kong residents. He founded the pro-democratic tabloid Apple Daily, which became one of the most widely read newspapers in Hong Kong. Today, Jimmy Lai is in a Chinese prison. From his own testimony and exclusive interviews with diplomats, activists, scholars, and friends from around the world, one thing becomes clear: Jimmy's fate is in our hands.

The film is a poignant portrayal not only of the unusual story of the political activist Jimmy Lai but also of the process of shaping the identity of Hong Kong residents, influenced by a series of dramatic and tragic events.

Following the screening, there will be an opportunity to discuss the situation in Hong Kong with sinologist Mgr. Simona Fantová, who teaches Chinese at the Faculty of Law, Charles University.
