On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the CHR organized a lecture and subsequent discussion on the topic Antisemitism in the Context of the Contemporary World. The highly relevant topic was discussed by the head of CHR, prof. Helena Hofmannová, and the director of the Herzl Center for Israeli Studies, dr. Irena Kalhousová.
The first part of the lecture, led by prof.ssor Hofmannová, focused on the development of manifestations of antisemitism in law during the 20th century and how this experience influences our perception of vulnerable minorities today. It addressed various aspects of relevant historical legal experiences, such as the loss of legal and political status of an individual, leading to the exploitation of their vulnerability and objectification.
The second part of the lecture, presented by dr. Kalhousová, explored the connections between the extreme left, right, and Islam in the realms of antisemitism and anti-Zionism. The emphasis was primarily on contemporary movements, their main ideas, and arguments that lead to discrimination, harassment, and even physical violence against the Jewish community. A significant portion of the lecture also addressed the response to current events in Gaza and the resulting increase in antisemitic attacks.
The subsequent discussion, moderated by prof. Kristina Koldinská, like the earlier parts of the speakers' presentations, touched upon a range of specific issues outlined above. Among other topics, it highlighted the role of education as a means of preventing hate attacks against the Jewish population, as well as the boundaries of freedom of expression.
We extend our gratitude to all the speakers for an engaging and inspiring lecture and discussion. We hope you also enjoyed the event and gained a wealth of valuable information.
