On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, the 7th edition of the academic festival Faculty Night took place at the Faculty of Law of Charles University. The festival offered students and the general public the opportunity to attend various lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and much more. Members of the Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights participated in the event by organizing a screening of the film “The Hong Konger: Jimmy Lai’s Extraordinary Struggle for Freedom,“ which depicts recent events in Hong Kong leading to the suppression of human rights by the Chinese Communist government.
The documentary tells the story of Hong Kong businessman and political activist Jimmy Lai, who became a leading voice against China's repressive policies and at the forefront of the pro-democracy protests. His fight against the tyranny of the communist regime in the People's Republic of China illustrates the importance of traditional Western institutions, such as the free market and the rule of law. It is a story of courage, perseverance, and determination.
We hope the film was as deeply moving and inspiring for you as it was for us. We extend our thanks to sinologist Simona Fantová for her insightful and engaging commentary on the history and present situation of Hong Kong, as well as for the valuable discussion following the film.
