Press conference on the establishment of the CHR

Dear readers,

we would like to invite you to the press conference organized on the occasion of the establishment of the Center for Constitutionalism and Human Rights at the Faculty of Law of Charles University. The press conference will be held on September 29 at 10:30 a.m. in room 117 at the Faculty of Law, with the participation of the dean of the Faculty of Law, prof. Radim Boháč, prof. Kristina Koldinská and prof. Helena Hofmannová, head of the center, as well as other members of the Center.

With a press conference, we would like to provide a new impetus to the public debate on the state of human rights in the Czech Republic. Human rights are faced with a whole range of systematic problems, among which we can include, for example, issues of social and legal inequality. Distrust in pluralism and tolerance, which is also manifested in the law, further complicates the position of a number of vulnerable groups of persons such as persons with a minority sexual orientation, migrants or members of national minorities. 15 years after the DH case, we still face fundamental difficulties with inclusion in education. This raises a number of questions regarding the provision of guarantees of equality and the prohibition of discrimination. Furthermore, the institutional framework for the protection of human rights shows weakness with regard to the problems in the functioning of the ombudsman's office.

We believe that the academic sphere should not only be a passive observer of social processes, but should, on the contrary, be an active participant in discussions and thus support the development of the value framework of society. The Center for Constitutionalism and Human Rights aims to help Charles University achieve this goal. That is why we would like to provide, through a press conference, a space in which it will be possible to formulate the key human rights problems in the Czech Republic and start discussions trying to solve them at the very beginning of its creation. Your help would be crucial in this sense, because it is the media that can mediate communication between the academic sphere and the wider public, as well as contribute to the search for ways to strengthen the protection of human rights in the Czech Republic.
