On April 19, 2024, the Faculty of Law hosted a workshop titled Segregation of Roma Students in Education - Experiences Across the Republic. The event featured four invited experts who shared their experiences from schools and areas where efforts against the segregation of Roma students are underway, presented in two sessions.
The first session focused on comparing the current situation at schools with a significant proportion of students from minority backgrounds, in Ostrava and Prague's Žižkov district. The guests included Milan Bindatsch, a teaching assistant from Ibsenova Elementary School in Ostrava, which is situated in an area defined by major roads and the main railway corridor, with a high percentage of Roma students, and Irena Venturová, a social educator from Cimburkova Elementary School in Prague 3, where the local authority is attempting to “desegregate“ by changing the school's educational plan to a Waldorf approach. They shared their daily experiences, communication with parents, students, and administrators, and the challenges they currently face. The second session was initiated by Miroslav Klempár, founder of the organization Awen Amenca, which works towards the integration of Roma children into mainstream society through civic engagement. His presentation was complemented by Pavel Uhl from the Centre, who provided a legal context based on his extensive legal practice.
The event was attended by approximately 25 participants, who engaged in numerous questions and lively discussions following each presentation.
The workshop was aimed at professionals, including teachers, students, and representatives of state and local government, who are or will be regularly dealing with the issue of Roma student segregation. Its unique focus on specific stories of both good and poor practices allowed for a deeper analysis of the problem's impacts on individuals, beyond what could be achieved through mere abstract evaluation of the system without understanding the realities.
We thank all the speakers and participants and look forward to seeing you at future events! 💛
